To help your smile thrive, the American Dental Association recommends that patients brush and floss every day to clear away harmful bacteria and plaque in the mouth. They also recommend brushing for at least two minutes, twice each day. This will help protect your teeth from the disastrous effects of tooth decay and gum disease.

The tools you use will greatly determine your success. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush will nurture sensitive tooth enamel and gum tissue, even as it effectively cleans. Using a small-medium toothbrush head is better at reaching those hard to clean areas in the back where the molars lie and where oral debris tends to accumulate. Strive to brush twice a day, floss once (bedtime is preferable) and follow up with a microbial oral rinse.

A mouth guard provides protection for teeth, tongue, lips, face, and jaw while you participate in high-impact sports or recreational activities. Wearing a night guard can protect your teeth if you routinely grind your teeth as you sleep. A night guard helps prevent teeth grinding and saves you from enamel erosion, migraines, and TMJ disorders which impact the jaw joints.

Your teeth and gums will thrive with smile-friendly foods. A diet high in vitamins, minerals, fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, healthy dairy and whole grains will support oral health. Avoid or limit sugary foods and drinks, along with sticky foods that create acids from oral bacteria. After eating, rinse well to remove oral debris and neutralize the harmful acid from your food and drinks. Chewing sugarless gum also stimulates saliva levels, washing away bacteria and diluting acids.

Don’t forget to see your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. We will remove hardened plaque and check for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral cancer to treat problems early.
